ASUS G73Jh Review

The G73Jh is the latest laptop from gaming specialists ASUS. This, along with its price tag of around $1700, brings with it a certain expectation of powerful performance, and at first glance the G73Jh is one of the most advanced gaming laptops out there. Is it really a good investment, though, or should gamers look elsewhere?
Positives
Having been unveiled to the public at the CES in January, the ASUS G73Jh is one of the latest steps in the evolution of the gaming laptop. The main challenge associated with gaming laptops in general from the start has been fitting the necessary high-octane hardware into a reasonably small, portable package, and the G73Jh certainly presents an impressive response to this problem. It’s powered by an Intel Core i7 2.66GHz CPU, with Turbo Boost up to 3.33GHz and, perhaps most importantly, an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 graphics card with 1GB of VRAM. This means that gamers will be able to run the most recent games without having to turn the detail sliders all the way down as they would if attempting to run them on non-gaming laptops.
Furthermore, the G73Jh is one of the only DirectX 11-compatible laptops on the market, which indicates just how advanced it is hardware-wise. The G73Jh’s 17.3-inch, 1920 x 1080 resolution screen is an excellent platform for the visuals that this hardware can provide.
Negatives
Gaming laptops have always suffered from certain problems, and the G73Jh still hasn’t quite overcome all of them. The ASUS designers have done their best, but the G73Jh does certainly have a bit of a bulky appearance in comparison to most standard laptops. The powerful hardware calls for serious heat-reduction measures, and, while the G73Jh stays cool to the touch, it does this by using a powerful dual-fan system, which can get a bit noisy. That being said, it probably isn’t loud enough to be heard over your speakers, let alone headphones.
The Bottom Line
The G73Jh is clearly the best choice for gamers for whom budget isn’t a consideration. If you’re in the market for a gaming laptop and you’ve got the money to spend, the G73Jh is the one that provides the most gaming potential.
