It Pays To Look After Your Laptop Battery Follow These Tips

Laptop computers are common now, most people have them to take to school or when they travel for work. Theyre useful and easy to move with. What is also common is to see someone clambering to get a place to charge a laptop battery.

1, Discharge your battery by playing a DVD movie or something else that Consumes a lot of power. When fully discharged plug it back into the mains for a full charge.

2, Never try and charge your battery when its only half discharged, this will cause the battery not to charge properly.

3, If your laptop is connected to AC supply, then the battery should be removed from the laptop. This is because heat damages li-ion batteries, if your laptop puts out a lot of heat near to the batteries (and most smartly designed laptops dont) then you should remove it when youre not using it.

4 ,Never never use a battery charger from a different make of laptop. different makes and models have different voltage settings and connection ports, so you will most likely do major damage to your battery. If you value your laptop/notebook only use the manufactures supplied charger.

5, If your laptop came with a supplied software for monitoring your battery consumption, make sure you are familiar with it as it may save you a lot of battery recharge cycles if configured properly.

6, Always try and keep your laptop on a flat surface, if you have the laptop on your lap most of the time you can inadvertently stop the air flow through the computer, which can increase the battery temperature and damage it.

Laptops Battery Life

The battery life and the laptop battery care is another most important topic which one must have to care so as to have longer battery life. Normally the batteries which the manufacturers provide with the Laptops are Li-Ion or Li-Polymer these are rechargeable batteries and can give you optimum backup even you are working on battery packs. But the main thing is tat how to optimize it to make it work more efficiently.

The common term when we talk about Battery in Laptops is the Depth of Discharge (DOD). Depth of Discharge (DOD) is the amount that a battery is run down to before it is put back on charge. For a notebook this can vary enormously. Many machines are only run down to 70% battery during short stints of battery power (known as a shallow DOD), others are discharged completely to 10% or 5% (known as deep DOD), this is when the notebook switches off or warns about low battery.

Now another technical aspect is the charge cycle. A charge cycle is a cycle of running the battery down and then charging it up again. One charge cycle is classified as when the battery is run down to 70% or less and then charged again to 90% or more. A battery does not have to be discharged until it is flat before a charge cycle is used.

The other main factor that affects battery life is temperature, the hotter the battery the less charge cycles it will run for, the industry suggestions are that a battery is run at between 10 and 30 degrees centigrade. It should be noted that it may be hotter inside the notebook where the battery is than in the room where it is being used.

The battery life and rechargeable ability of a particular type of batteries like Li-Ion varies but these are more than enough for you before going for its replacement. Always try to have a look at your battery packs how much backup they provide and time of full charge. This is done so as to check if the batteries are becoming old or demanding for the replacement or what. If possible always try to use Power Supply while working on Laptops.

Always carry with you an extra battery pack so as to use it when you are traveling and where it is not possible to lug in to the Power Supply. If you have found that the batteries has gone old then immediately replace it with new one and never keep the old batteries in the Laptop thinking of buying the new one. This will damage your internal circuit.

How To Optimize Your Laptop Battery

Now the main problem which comes with most of the laptop users is of the battery backups that it provides. Many of the laptops which are in the market are good enough to provide you with the maximum battery life but this is not so with most of the brands. Usually they provide a bit lower battery backups than the rated ones. Now what to do to have an optimum backup for your battery. Here are some of the basic things or tips which you should follow in order to make your battery give you with the most backup time.

First of all go for the proper checkup or the life of the battery. This can be done by having software installed on your laptop which constantly monitors your battery and provides you the feedback. Dissecting A Smart Battery – Part 1

Smart Batteries – they are used in PDAs, MP3s, MP4s, Laptops, Cell Phones, Smartphones, DVD players, and other electronic devices. When we buy new batteries we want them to work. We really don’t care how they work just as long as the do. But since PDA Batteries are a unique interest for me and since pda batteries are smart batteries I’m going to dig a little deeper to discover what lies within PDA batteries. So follow along as I disect a pda battery to learn what it is made of!

Contained within a smart battery is specialized hardware. Hardware that has a specific purpose: to deliver calculated and on demand current as well as predicted information.

This specialized hardware includes:

1. the connector
2. the fuse
3. the charge and discharge FETs
4. the cell pack
5. the sense resistor (RSENSE)
6. the primary and secondary protection ICs
7. the fuel-gauge IC
8. the thermistor
9. the pc board
10. the EEPROM
11. the SMBus

But what are each of these components and what do they do? Let’s find out?

The connector is a device that joins electric circuits together. Most battery packs require more than one connector. The main battery connector is both the mechanical and electrical part that interfaces the battery to the PDA or other electronic device. If you have ever installed a battery in your PDA then you probably have plugged your battery in by plugging/snapping in the main battery connector to the device’s PC board. Features that have to be considered when selecting a connector of a particular battery is operating temperature (range/limits) since high capacity batteries discharge excessive heat – having a connector that can withstand such temperature extremes will prevent a short circuit.

Connectors also have to proper pin assignments so that current and performance capacity can be met and short-circuit thresholds are predetermined. Pin orientation within the connector has to be designed in order to fit the device. If it doesn’t well you won’t be able to connect the battery to the PDA or other electronic device. Finally the connectors has to be handle time-varying current therefore the ratio of the phasor voltage across the element to the phasor current through the element (otherwise known as impedance) has to be preset or else expect connector to not function in the way it was supposed to!

In the next article of this series I will cover the smart battery’s fuse, charge and discharge FETs , the cell pack, and the sense resistor (RSENSE). The article after the next will cover the primary and secondary protection ICs, the fuel-gauge IC, the thermistor, the pc board, the EEPROM, and the SMBus.
